Hearing4all

Today, we’re starting a new series of scientists’ portraits: “Hearing Minds”. Its aim is to make cluster members from all status groups better known to each other as well as to the general public and the scientific community. Our Spokesperson Christiane Thiel, professor of Biological Psychology at the Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg makes the start.

How can children with and without hearing loss communicate, play and learn together on equal terms right from the beginning? This question is at the heart of two new research projects led by Ulla Licandro, special pedagogue at the University of Oldenburg and member of the Cluster of Excellence Hearing4all.connects.

The British-German hearing researcher Geoffrey Manley has spent many decades studying the hearing of reptiles, birds and mammals, including humans. He spent 15 years as a visiting researcher at the Cluster of Excellence Hearing4all. Recently, Manley published his new book, “Ears wide open”. Dr Brilliant is an Indonesian engineer and a neuroscientist. He currently works as postdoc in the Auditory Neuroscience Lab of Prof. Dr Andrej Kral at Hannover Medical School (MHH). In this short interview, he talks about his journey to Germany as well as his work in the Cluster of Excellence Hearing4all.connects.

To develop and disseminate open standards and models for interoperable electronic health data, with a view to utilising them for future studies and improving patient care – this is the aim of the non-profit organisation openEHR, of which the University of Oldenburg has recently become an institutional member.

“Categorical Loudness Scaling” marks the first openEHR archetype developed by members of Hearing4all.connects to be released; it is now available in the international Clinical Knowledge Manager (CKM).
