Dr. Mareike Buhl receives the 2025 prize of KIND Hörstiftung
At the 3rd Interdisciplinary Colloquium of the KIND Hörstiftung, the 2025 Stiftungspreis (foundation prize) was awarded to Dr. Mareike Buhl. The foundation donates the prize, which is endowed with 15,000 euros, every two years for work in the areas of causal research, early detection and therapy of hearing disorders.
Buhl received the award for her research work, which she conducted as a doctoral and postdoctoral student in the Hearing4all Cluster of Excellence at the University of Oldenburg and has since continued to develop, currently at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. The focus is on a statistical approach to improve audiological diagnostics and to evaluate the individual benefits of hearing aid provision. It is based on comparing an individual’s hearing loss with typical, data-based and machine-learned patterns. This involves matching the auditory profile of that person with the profiles of many other patients. In conjunction with a classification of hearing loss categories developed by Buhl, the data-based approach has great potential for a clinical decision support system. In the future, ENT doctors and audiologists will be able to include this in the diagnosis and hearing care. The system will allow for more targeted treatment, for example with hearing aids that are specially adapted to the patient’s profile.
