The Golden Ear Challenge
Why are people’s listening abilities as diverse as their musical tastes? Music psychologists are researching this question and have developed a special concert experience as a live experiment for their audience: The Golden Ear Challenge!
Music connects us all – but we listen to it in different ways. In fact, our listening abilities are just as diverse as our musical tastes. But why is that? Music psychologists have long been interested in this question. They are investigating the causes of differences in our hearing abilities, not least to improve concert experiences for people with hearing impairments. In this context, the ‘Golden Ear Challenge’ was developed at the University of Oldenburg. The interactive concert series takes the audience on a fascinating journey into the world of hearing research: listeners become part of music psychology research by taking part in a concert experiment. They are invited to listen attentively to the music and then recognise intentionally inserted mistakes in the music. Using an online tool and their smartphones, visitors submit their answers. These will be analysed live so that the most successful participants can compete against each other again in a final round to win the Golden Ear Award.
